Islamabad, Sep 11: Tayyab Ikram, a Macau resident with Pakistani ancestry, is set to create history once more as the International Hockey Federation (FIH) president.
By the deadline of August 31, no other contender had turned in their candidacy papers, allowing Ikram to serve a second term as head of the worldwide governing body. On November 9, during the FIH elections in Muscat, Oman, an official announcement is anticipated. Ikram is widely regarded as one of the world’s best sports administrators and was the first Pakistani to head the FIH.
Over his long career, he has held leadership positions with the Asian Hockey Federation, the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
The FIH president, who is of Pakistani descent, has influenced sports in seven Olympic Games, including the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Ikram enhanced the FIH’s standing internationally during his first term, and the organization was nominated for the esteemed IOC Climate Action Award.
Under his direction, the “FIH Empowerment and Engagement Strategy,” which aims to promote hockey globally, was also introduced. Notwithstanding various obstacles, such as Pakistan losing the right to host the 2024 Olympic qualifiers, Ikram is steadfast in his efforts to bring hockey back to his own nation.
He has promised to create a long-lasting model for the game that will motivate upcoming generations and aid in Pakistan regaining its hegemony in international hockey.
