Islamabad, Oct 4: Pakistani Sisters Excel at Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships. At the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship in Sun City, South Africa, on Friday, Pakistan’s Sybil Sohail won the gold medal in the 47 kg classic bench press event. In the 52 kg division, her sister Veronica Sohail made her impact as well. She placed third, just missing out on a gold medal to an English powerlifter, and an Indian lifter won the silver.
Fifteen countries will compete in the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship, which runs from October 4 to October 13. Sisters Sybil, Veronika, and Twinkle Sohail, who will participate in the 84 kg division, make up Pakistan’s three-person squad. Notably, Pakistan’s female representation at the event marks a debut.
The three sisters are also the first women’s team from Pakistan to compete in the competition.Competitors include teams from South Africa, the host nation, Australia, England, Canada, India, Isle of Man, Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland, Wales, Singapore, New Zealand, Scotland, and Trinidad & Tobago.
It appears that Nooh Dastgir Butt, the weightlifting gold medallist from Pakistan at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, would participate in the Powerlifting Championship’s men’s division. Hasnain Raza, Haider Ali, and Dr. Adnan, who are scheduled to compete in different master’s categories, will accompany him to the competition. On October 6, the aforementioned male group of Pakistani lifters will go for South Africa.
