Pakistani women mountaineers have etched their names in history by scaling the 5,400-meter-high Bari La Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan. This landmark achievement highlights the growing role of women in adventure sports and showcases their strength, resilience, and passion for mountaineering.

The extraordinary expedition was held to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Female climbers from every corner of the country—including Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and Islamabad—came together to accomplish this remarkable challenge.

The team was led by Bibi Afzoon from Gilgit-Baltistan, joined by notable members such as journalist Mona Khan, Amna Shabbir, Maria Bangash, Zeba Batool, Bisma Hassan, Iqra Jelani, Lareeb Batool, Madiha Syed, and Shahreen Khan. Their unity and determination turned this climb into an inspiring national success.

The four-day journey kicked off from Skardu on September 7, where the group underwent practice sessions and acclimatization hikes at the scenic Deosai Top. With guidance from legendary mountaineers including Sajid Sadpara, Ashraf Sadpara, Fida Ali, and Sharif Sadpara, the women successfully reached the summit on September 10. Their dedication, coupled with professional mentoring, made this challenging ascent possible.

The achievement received nationwide praise. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif applauded the climbers and extended an invitation to the Prime Minister’s House. Karrar Haidri, Vice President of the Alpine Club, called the feat a testament to women’s determination and limitless potential.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s most accomplished female climber, Naila Kiani, expressed pride in seeing young women boldly entering the mountaineering arena, calling their courage an inspiration for the generations to come.
