Islamabad, Nov 14: Pakistan’s Climate Change Ministry Partners with GGGI to Mobilize Green Finance for Climate Action. The Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination, together with the Global Green Growth Initiative, has established a four-year (2024-2028) Country Programme Framework agreement aimed at promoting sustainable development goals in Pakistan through focused climate actions and initiatives for green growth.
The signing ceremony took place at the Pakistan Pavilion during the UN-led Global Climate Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, where Aisha Humera Moriani, Secretary of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination, and Helena McLeod, Deputy Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), officially signed the agreement.
Romina Khurshid Alam expressed her gratitude to the GGGI for their commitment to collaborating with Pakistan in facilitating green finance mobilization, supporting policy development for climate action, and promoting investments in sectors that contribute to climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
The Country Programme Framework aligns with the GGGI Strategy 2030 and Pakistan’s national objectives, concentrating on enhancing climate resilience, advancing sustainable agriculture, and encouraging economic growth through innovative and inclusive strategies.
Elaborating on the main goals of the Country Programme Framework, the deputy director-general of GGGI noted that the organization seeks to assist Pakistan in transitioning to a green economy by partnering with national stakeholders to tackle urgent issues such as water shortages, deforestation, and energy inefficiency, exacerbated by the effects of climate change.
Previously, a collaborative event titled ‘Pakistan’s NDC Technology Roadmap for the Waste and Water Sector to Leverage Climate Finance’ was hosted by the Climate Change & Environmental Coordination Ministry, the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), and GGGI at the Pakistan Pavilion.
Experts in climate finance and environmental sustainability from various international organizations attended the event. The NDC technology roadmap for the waste and water sectors is primarily designed to help Pakistan achieve its climate objectives under the Paris Agreement, concentrating on these crucial sectors with the assistance of the Global Green Growth Initiative (GGGI).
During a high-level address, the Prime Minister’s climate aide, Romina Khurshid Alam, indicated that the NDC technology roadmap would serve as a strategic planning instrument that connects the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with significant investment opportunities, converting climate objectives into practical results.
She further emphasized the vital role of technology in executing any climate change policy. The “NDC Roadmap for the Waste and Water Sector to Leverage Climate Finance” initiative will be instrumental in fulfilling the country’s climate objectives under the Paris Agreement, with a focus on the waste and water sectors.
Romina Khurshid Alam also discussed essential aspects such as technology needs assessments, innovation and research, regulatory frameworks, and funding mechanisms necessary for achieving Pakistan’s waste and water-related targets set under the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015.
Additionally, she shared valuable insights regarding the advancement of Pakistan’s climate commitments and the progress toward its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
