Islamabad, 15, May, 2025: Early Summer Break concerns are rising across Pakistan as an intense heatwave prompts parents, educators, and students to urge provincial authorities to advance the start of summer holidays.

The demand comes amid alarming forecasts from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which has issued warnings about soaring temperatures in multiple regions of the country.

According to meteorological officials, a persistent high-pressure system is set to drive temperatures significantly above seasonal norms.

The PMD predicts that between May 15 and May 20, southern parts of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan could witness temperature spikes ranging from 4°C to 6°C above average.

Meanwhile, Early Summer Break appeals are also growing in central and northern areas, including Islamabad, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, where temperatures are expected to rise 5°C to 7°C between May 15 and 19.

With heat-related health risks escalating, many parents have flooded social media platforms and school administration offices with requests for earlier school closures.

The current academic calendar in Punjab sets summer vacations from June 1 to August 9, 2025. However, this may be reconsidered in light of the weather emergency.

Punjab’s Secretary of School Education, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, acknowledged that the official summer break schedule could be revised.

He stated that if the temperature rises to dangerous levels, the Early Summer Break could be initiated at least a week sooner to prioritize student and staff safety.

Amid rising temperatures, some relief may arrive by May 19 or 20. The PMD has indicated that a westerly weather system could bring rainfall, thunderstorms, and isolated hailstorms to northern regions, including Kashmir, Islamabad, Pothohar, upper KP, northeast Punjab, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

As climate patterns continue to shift, school authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

Many believe that flexibility in academic planning, such as an Early Summer Break, is becoming essential for the well-being of students in the face of increasing weather extremes.
