Islamabad, July 4, 2025: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab has sounded a red alert for intense monsoon rains expected on Muharram 9 and 10, urging residents to take urgent precautions amid a worsening weather forecast.

According to the PDMA, heavy rainfall is likely to begin from July 5, affecting multiple regions across southern and central Punjab. The authority has warned of flash flood risks, damage to infrastructure, and threats to public safety—particularly in mountainous areas like Dera Ghazi Khan.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has advised organizers of Muharram processions to avoid risky locations such as weak rooftops and areas near electric poles. He emphasized strict adherence to safety protocols and urged residents near rivers and streams to stay away from flood-prone areas.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. Local administrations must stay alert, and the public should cooperate fully,” said Kathia.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has already imposed Section 144 from June 27 to July 6, 2025, banning unapproved gatherings during Muharram-ul-Haram. Only processions and majalis with prior approval will be permitted, according to the official notification.

This dual concern of weather-related risks and security threats during Muharram has put local authorities on high alert.

Tragically, recent monsoon activity has already claimed 18 lives, including 11 children, within a span of 24 hours. PDMA’s official report noted lightning strikes in Khanewal and Okara, and electrocution incidents in Mandi Bahauddin, along with 27 houses damaged due to collapsed structures.
