Islamabad, Feb 2: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has reaffirmed that the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) is aimed at combating fake news and addressing social media abuses, rather than restricting journalistic freedom.
Speaking as the chief guest at the oath-taking ceremony of the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) Union on Sunday, Tarar stressed that unchecked digital platforms are fueling misinformation, harassment, threats to national security, and economic instability.
To regulate digital content, the minister announced the formation of the Digital Media Protection Authority, which will include representatives from the private sector, press clubs, journalist organizations, and IT professionals. This authority will ensure swift decision-making, with tribunals mandated to pass orders within 24 hours. Appeals can be made to higher courts, including the High Court and Supreme Court.

“This is a crucial step in addressing the threats posed by social media,” Tarar stated, adding that the law will curb misinformation and malicious content while aligning with global best practices. He urged journalistic organizations to support the initiative.
Tarar also criticized corruption, stating that it has caused irreparable harm to national institutions. He praised APP Managing Director Asim Khichi for exposing corruption within the organization and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Highlighting the vital role of institutions like PTV, Radio Pakistan, and APP, he emphasized their contribution to promoting Pakistan’s global image.
Acknowledging the struggles of media professionals, the minister assured that the government is prioritizing journalist welfare. He announced special budgetary allocations for journalists who pass away during service.
Upon his arrival at Radio Pakistan Lahore, Tarar was welcomed with traditional drum beats, horse dances, and rose petal showers. He administered the oath to the newly elected APP Employees Union officials and congratulated them on their election.“Employees are the nation’s asset,” he stated, urging them to work with dedication and integrity. Shields were distributed among attendees in recognition of their contributions.
The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including PML-N leader Begum Sajida Farooq Tarar (mother of the minister), Coordinator for Heritage and Culture Farah Diba, Director General Radio Sheikh Saeed, Bureau Chief APP Lahore Talib Hussain, and several senior journalists and media professionals.
