Islamabad, Feb 19: To address Peshawar’s increasing transportation demands, the government has announced the expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to additional areas. During a high-level meeting chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, it was decided that BRT buses will now operate on Ring Road, Bara Road, and Khyber Road. To facilitate this expansion, the government plans to procure 72 new diesel-hybrid buses, ensuring a more efficient and eco-friendly public transport system.
Authorities have set a six-month timeline to complete all necessary civil works before these new buses are deployed. Additionally, officials reviewed the progress of ongoing BRT infrastructure projects, including the Mall of Hayatabad and Dubgari Plaza, both of which are expected to be completed by the end of April. This expansion aims to improve connectivity and ease commuter congestion in the city.
In an effort to enhance traffic flow, the government has also decided to complete the long-pending missing link of Ring Road with full financial backing to expedite construction. Furthermore, seven new underpasses will be built along Ring Road and University Road to reduce congestion at key intersections. Feasibility studies for these underpasses are set to be completed within two months.
Plans are also in place to construct additional underpasses in densely populated areas to further alleviate traffic bottlenecks. Moreover, obstacles causing congestion on University Road will be removed within a month to improve vehicle movement.

Expanding the BRT model beyond Peshawar, the government is considering introducing similar services in other major cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. To kickstart this initiative, feasibility studies will be conducted in Mardan, Swat, Abbottabad, and Dera Ismail Khan. This strategic move aims to modernize public transportation across the province and provide residents with a more reliable transit system.
With these developments, the government is taking significant steps to enhance urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and offer a more sustainable public transport network. The expansion of BRT services, along with improved road infrastructure, is expected to greatly benefit commuters and contribute to the overall economic growth of the region.
