Islamabad, 14 June 2025:  Petrol and Diesel Prices in Pakistan are projected to edge upward in the upcoming pricing cycle, as fluctuations in international crude markets begin to ripple through the domestic fuel economy.

According to insiders familiar with the matter, petrol may rise by Rs. 1 per liter, while high-speed diesel (HSD) could see a sharper increase of Rs. 5 per liter, starting from June 16.

Currently, the ex-depot price of petrol stands at Rs. 252.63 per liter. As a primary fuel for private cars, motorbikes, and rickshaws, any upward revision in petrol costs typically places additional financial stress on working-class and middle-income families.

Diesel, priced at Rs. 254.64 per liter, serves as the backbone for Pakistan’s freight and transport sectors, powering trucks, buses, trains, and agricultural equipment. A spike in diesel rates is expected to drive inflation further, particularly in essential sectors such as food supply and logistics.

Government Revenues from Fuel Levies Remain Intact

Despite maintaining a zero percent general sales tax (GST) on petroleum products, the federal government continues to generate significant revenue through alternative levies.

This includes a Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) of Rs. 78.02 on petrol and Rs. 77.01 on diesel, in addition to Rs. 16 per liter in customs duties on both fuel types.

Furthermore, an additional Rs. 17 per liter is earmarked as profit margins for oil marketing companies and fuel station operators. This layered pricing structure ensures a consistent revenue stream for the treasury while passing the burden of volatility onto end consumers.

Inflationary Pressures Mount

If approved, the upcoming adjustment in Petrol and Diesel Prices could further complicate the inflation landscape, already strained by currency pressures and global commodity trends. Analysts warn that sustained increases in transport fuel costs may result in broader economic ripple effects in the coming weeks.
