The Pakistan hockey is once again in a stand off crisis with an Audit PHF report reporting more than Rs87 million spent by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) as unapproved expenditure. Audit was conducted over the last two financial years on government grants, which showed that the government received Rs119.667 million but only Rs32.317 million was properly accounted for. The majority of the dubious spending were associated with their travel and daily allowances (TA/DA) expenses of the officials of PHF.

HF President Tariq Bugti and Secretary Rana Mujahid allegedly cheated in claiming $500 daily allowances when in international tours yet players have not received payment of their services. The disclosures also pose questions as to whether or not the federation has put administrative amenity above player growth, grassroots offers and international shows.

The relevance of the timing of the Audit PHF cannot be more precarious. Pakistan (hockey) team is struggling to find its way back in the elitist Pro League- a platform that is perceived to be central course to restoring the lost game glory in Pakistan. With the financial mismanagement being put under observation, the sponsors and the backers are reluctant in committing funds. The PHF is said to be seeking a grant of Rs700 million ($2.6 million) to enter but there is a fading trust in its financial probity.

To bring up Pakistan hockey back to its glory, the PHF must make immediate measures to reintroduce honesty and proper use of funds to secure the future of Pakistan hockey in terms of the international level. Analysts claim that it is crucial to implement the recommendations observed in the Audit PHF so as to regain international competitive position and credibility.
