Islamabad, 12 Apr, 2025: In a landmark move aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s regional ties, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is all set to initiate direct international flights to Uzbekistan. This development aligns with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s strategic vision to enhance regional connectivity through the New Route to Central Asia.
The launch of this air corridor is expected to significantly uplift both tourism and bilateral trade, while private aviation companies are also being encouraged to participate in this new venture.
The announcement was made following a high-level meeting between Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, and Uzbekistan’s Minister for Tourism, Umid Shadiev.

The discussion, also attended by Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Alisher Tukhtaev, revolved around promoting cultural ties and exploring collaborative opportunities across various sectors.
Haroon Akhtar Khan emphasized that Pakistan is fully committed to deepening its engagement with Uzbekistan, particularly in areas like travel, heritage preservation, and people-to-people exchange.
He stated that the Prime Minister envisions the New Route to Central Asia as a bridge that connects Pakistan with the rich traditions and economic promise of Central Asia.
“This region offers untapped potential in both trade and tourism. Now is the ideal moment to reconnect with our Central Asian neighbors,” Khan remarked during the session.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s desire to create strong bonds through cultural diplomacy and sustainable tourism.
On the other side, Minister Umid Shadiev welcomed the growing relationship and stressed the importance of facilitating citizens through accessible travel options and joint ventures.
He acknowledged that several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) had already been signed, laying a strong foundation for this collaborative future.
As the New Route to Central Asia prepares for its official debut, it marks not only a diplomatic achievement but also a doorway to economic prosperity.
