Islamabad, Jan 20: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has reached a significant milestone with the completion of state-of-the-art modular operation theatres, as reported by ARY News on Monday, citing sources from the National Institute of Health (NIH).
With this upgrade, PIMS has become the first government medical facility in Pakistan to feature modular operation theatres. A total of seven such theatres have been established, equipped with cutting-edge medical technologies and facilities to ensure a superior standard of care, according to the Ministry of Health.
The project, costing Rs1.4 billion, was funded to enhance the hospital’s surgical capabilities. The modular theatres, imported from Germany, are designed to be portable and can be relocated as needed.

These theatres come with advanced sterilization units, audio-video recording systems for precise surgery monitoring, and wireless cameras to improve the accuracy of medical procedures. They are also equipped with backup batteries to ensure uninterrupted operations during power outages and feature a temperature-controlled system for medical gases.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to inaugurate the modular operation theatres at PIMS later this week.
However, PIMS, established in 1985, comprises three semi-autonomous hospitals: the 592-bed Islamabad Hospital (IH) spread over 3.5 hectares, the 230-bed Children’s Hospital specializing in pediatric care over 1.6 hectares, and the 125-bed Maternal & Child Health Care Center focusing on obstetrics and gynecology. This latest development marks a significant step in modernizing healthcare facilities in the country.
