Islamabad, June 25, 2025: The Government of Portugal is changing its nationality laws. These changes will impact people living in the country now and those who want to apply for Portuguese citizenship in the future.
The goal is to make sure that only those who have a strong connection to Portugal can become citizens.

However, applicants from other countries, including Pakistan, will need 10 years of legal residence.Previously, the requirement was shorter. Also, the residency period will now count from the date of residence permit issuance, not the date of arrival or application.
Connection to Portugal Required
Authorities will now look for proof of a real connection with the country. This includes the ability to speak Portuguese, knowledge of its culture, and awareness of basic rights and duties. Tests will be conducted to check these areas.
