Islamabad, Feb 14: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the need to further enhance collaboration with the United Nations (UN) in addressing key global challenges such as sustainable development and climate change.
Speaking during a courtesy call from UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, on Friday, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong political commitment to combating climate change in close partnership with the international community and the UN.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif expressed appreciation for the vital work being carried out by the UN Country Team in Pakistan, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating 2022 floods. He conveyed his warm regards for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, praising his leadership in garnering global support for Pakistan’s recovery efforts during the crisis.

The prime minister highlighted that climate financing is a crucial component of addressing the impacts of climate change, stressing the importance of developed nations fulfilling their commitments in this regard. He expressed hope that continued collaboration with the UN would facilitate the implementation of various climate-related projects in Pakistan.
In addition, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the need to address the financing gap in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also called for greater representation and a stronger voice for developing countries in international financial institutions, urging reform of the global financial architecture.
The meeting was attended by key government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for EAD Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, SAPM Syed Tariq Fatemi, PM’s Coordinator for Climate Change Ms. Romina Khursheed Alam, and other senior officials.
