Islamabad, June 25, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the federal government’s strong commitment to transforming Pakistan’s agriculture sector through sustainable reforms aimed at increasing productivity, cutting costs, and uplifting rural communities.

Chairing a high-level meeting on agriculture sector reforms in Pakistan, the premier described agriculture as the backbone of the national economy. He emphasized that boosting per-acre yield and lowering production costs is critical for economic stability and food security.

To modernize farming practices, PM Shehbaz directed relevant ministries to gradually reduce taxes on agricultural machinery and tools, promoting farm mechanization nationwide. He also instructed authorities to speed up projects that improve storage infrastructure for agricultural produce, a long-standing demand from farmers across the country.

The prime minister noted with appreciation the financial support from provincial governments for new agriculture projects. He stated that such initiatives would accelerate sectoral growth and serve as a lifeline for rural livelihoods. He also expressed confidence that Pakistani agriculture students and scientists studying in China on scholarships would return with advanced skills and become future agri-entrepreneurs.

In a farmer-friendly move, PM Shehbaz confirmed that no new taxes would be levied on fertilizers or pesticides in the upcoming fiscal year—a relief for farmers struggling with rising input costs.

Highlighting the broader reform agenda, the prime minister emphasized the importance of modern infrastructure, affordable agricultural credit, and innovation as key pillars. He reiterated that increased agricultural productivity would directly uplift the economic well-being of farmers and rural populations.

The meeting also featured a detailed presentation on the National Agriculture Innovation and Growth Action Plan, which aims to enhance farm incomes, drive innovation, and expand export potential. Officials shared that Pakistan could significantly improve earnings by promoting value-added agricultural exports.

Additionally, the prime minister was briefed on the success of the Ignite National Technology Fund, which has so far helped launch 129 agricultural start-ups. These ventures are part of a broader effort to foster entrepreneurship and tech-driven solutions in farming.
