Islamabad, July 10, 2025: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) informed the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services on Tuesday that a three-year ban has been placed on the approval of new medical colleges due to a lack of teaching staff.
The committee meeting chaired by Senator Aamir Waleeduddin, reviewed the PMDC Amendment Bill presented by Senator Humayun Mohmand. The bill suggested adding lawmakers to the PMDC board. However, Health Minister Mustafa Kamal disagreed with the proposal.

PMDC President Dr Rizwan Taj stated that lawmakers had never been part of the board, but the chair clarified that previously, a senator and a member of the National Assembly were part of the board.

Irfan Siddiqui remarked that the inclusion of political figures would not alter the body’s framework. However, Mustafa Kamal informed the committee that even he, as the health minister, was not a member of the PMDC board.
He asserted that Pakistan’s medical experts continued to earn respect internationally, and political interference could harm their standing.
