Islamabad, Aug 7: Sheikh Hasina once stated, pointing to the IGP, “They [the police] are doing well.” Then, the IGP stated, “Even the police will be unable to maintain such a strict stance going forward due to the current state of affairs.”
The senior officials made an effort to convey to her that using force to control the situation would no longer be feasible. Sheikh Hasina, though, would not have it. Then, in a different room, the officials talked with Sheikh Rehana. They gave her an explanation of the circumstances and urged her to persuade Sheikh Hasina. Then Sheikh Rehana spoke with Sheikh Hasina, but Sheikh Hasina was adamant about retaining her position.
Then, one of the senior officers once phoned Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who was out of the country. Joy then talked to his mother on the phone. Sheikh Hasina then consented to step down. After that, she intended to record a speech for the country.
By then, there were intelligence reports indicating that a large number of students had begun their march from Uttara and Shahbagh. It was expected that the demonstrators would need forty-five minutes to travel from Shahbagh to Ganabhaban. A speech could not have enough time to be recorded. In light of this, Sheikh Hasina was instructed to get ready to depart in 45 minutes rather than having time to record a speech.
Subsequently, Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana visited the Tejgaon old airport’s helipad. After loading some of their belongings, they proceeded to Bangabhaban. There, Sheikh Hasina completed the procedures associated with her resignation. At approximately 2:30 a.m., Sheikh Hasina departed for India aboard a military helicopter with her younger sister.
The chopper circled for a while after entering Indian airspace before landing at a BSF helipad in Agartala. According to Indian media, she proceeded to Delhi from there. According to an Indian report today, Sheikh Hasina touched down at the Indian military airstrip in Hindon, Ghaziabad, at 5:36 p.m. local time (Uttar Pradesh). An army officer from India met her there. It was learned that from there, she might travel to London.
On January 11 of this year, Sheikh Hasina, the president of the Awami League, took the oath of office as prime minister for the fourth time. She was elected to the seventh national parliament in 1996, which led to her becoming prime minister. Sheikh Hasina led the opposition in parliament after the BNP won the 2001 elections, establishing the Awami League as the opposition party.
Sheikh Hasina was once again prime minister after winning the 2008 elections, which were conducted under a caretaker administration. Five years later, in 2014, she called a lopsided election in which 153 individuals were elected without opposition to the parliament. In that election (to the 10th parliament), the opposition did not participate. The government was created by Sheikh Hasina and her alliance partners. She was reappointed as prime minister in the contentious 2018 election. The election was termed the “night election” because to extensive suspicions that votes were cast the night before.
The 12th parliamentary election was held in January of this year, and the opposition did not participate. By running her own party’s leaders as independents in a “dummy” election, she was able to win the prime ministership twice. This election was referred to as a “dummy election” by the opposition. Then, during the course of these seven months, Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the nation by helicopter in response to the student movement and widespread unrest.
