Islamabad, 6 May, 2025: PTA Blocks more than 1.3 million unlawful online links as part of its broader mission to tackle harmful digital content, according to the latest statement from the Cabinet Division.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) took this action under its mandate outlined in the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

The blocked URLs were found across websites, mobile apps, and major social media networks. Officials confirmed that the PTA continues to ramp up its regulatory role in response to rising concerns about illegal content, including hate speech, indecent material, and threats to national security.

Depending on how secure a platform is whether using HTTP or the more encrypted HTTPS protocol the PTA either blocks access through its own Web Management System or contacts the digital service provider directly to request removal of the offending content.

The Minister in charge revealed that the telecom regulator has created multiple tools to improve how such content is reported and removed.

These include an online portal, a mobile application for public complaints, and designated email addresses for specific categories like child abuse material or religiously offensive content.

A toll-free helpline also remains operational to support citizens in reporting violations.

To improve inter-agency coordination, the PTA has allowed 49 official bodies including police departments, ministries, and other regulatory institutions to submit complaints via a protected digital portal.

This system was established in line with the 2021 Rules for the Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content.

The official added that these mechanisms are intended to streamline the process and make enforcement more effective.

Authorities now have quicker access to content flagged as unlawful, with faster response times and digital trails for transparency.

PTA Blocks not only aim to protect public morals and national values but also align with broader global efforts to regulate cyberspace.

However, digital rights activists continue to raise concerns about the balance between content regulation and freedom of expression.

Despite these debates, the government insists the framework in place is designed to shield users especially vulnerable groups from digital harm without compromising essential freedoms.

The telecommunication authority has reiterated its commitment to improving cyber governance, with plans to strengthen technical systems and engage further with international platforms for content moderation.
