Islamabad, Jan 2: Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Major General (R) Hafeezur Rehman, has criticized the government for failing to invest in Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure, leading to ongoing internet issues. Speaking at a National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecom meeting, Rehman emphasized the urgent need for government action to address these challenges.
Key Issues Highlighted:
- Lack of Investment: No new submarine cables have been added in the last 10 years, hindering the development of digital highways essential for reliable internet.
- Service Disruptions: Damage to three out of seven submarine cables last year led to a five-month internet disruption until October 2024.
- Telecom Infrastructure: Problems with equipment theft during power outages and the need for government support in laying fiber optic cables were also discussed.
Concerns Raised:
- Mobile Internet Quality: Committee Chairman Syed Aminul Haq criticized the poor quality of mobile internet, especially on major routes like Karachi-Hyderabad, and highlighted the lack of solutions for underserved areas.
- Surveillance Concerns: Accusations were made regarding the misuse of monitoring tools, including VPN registration requirements.
- Non-Recovery of Funds: A $800 million issue with Etisalat’s unpaid proceeds from the privatization of PTCL over 18 years was also raised.
Actions and Future Goals:
- A high-level committee is working to resolve the $800 million recovery issue.
- The committee aims to expand internet access to 1,000 villages and address gaps in connectivity along motorways and remote areas.
The meeting concluded with a call for greater investment to improve Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure.
