Islamabad, Feb 12: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has completed the Telecom Equipment Standards Regulations draft, which has already been reviewed by the Law and Justice Division. The next step is approval from the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, after which it will proceed to the Cabinet for final confirmation. Once approved, these regulations will be officially implemented.

The primary goal of these regulations is to establish a competitive and transparent telecom market while ensuring that all telecom systems meet essential criteria such as interoperability, performance, safety, and durability. The move aims to enhance the quality and reliability of telecom equipment across Pakistan.

To oversee these standards, PTA has set up the Standards and Conformance Assurance Directorate—a specialized body responsible for defining testing procedures based on regulatory technical benchmarks. This initiative underscores PTA’s commitment to eliminating substandard and incompatible telecom products, which can disrupt communication networks and pose safety risks to users.

These new regulations will apply to various stakeholders, including telecom operators, manufacturers, and importers. They will cover critical areas such as electromagnetic compatibility, health and safety standards, and radio frequency compliance. The enforcement of strict testing methods will help maintain smooth network functionality and reduce technical issues caused by poorly designed or incompatible telecom equipment.

By introducing these regulatory measures, PTA aims to protect both consumers and businesses from unreliable telecom products while boosting the overall security and efficiency of the telecom industry. The implementation of these standards will not only improve service quality but also strengthen Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure, ensuring a seamless and secure communication experience for all users.
