Islamabad, July 21, 2025: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned people to be careful while using WhatsApp, as many users are getting fake messages that can lead to account hacking or data theft.

PTA said on Sunday that users across Pakistan have reported receiving strange messages from unknown local and international numbers. These messages look like they are from the official WhatsApp team. They even include the WhatsApp logo and a clickable link to trick people into thinking they are real.

PTA clearly advised the public not to click on such links or reply to these messages. Some of the fake messages say that your WhatsApp account will be closed or needs to be verified.

“These links are malicious in nature and can be used to steal personal data or gain unauthorized access to users’ WhatsApp accounts,” the authority said.

PTA added that these fake messages are part of a large phishing plan to attack mobile users in Pakistan.

The public has been asked to stay alert and report any such messages. PTA said if you get any message that seems strange or makes urgent claims with a link, don’t trust it. Simply delete the message and do not open the link.

PTA also reminded everyone that real messages from WhatsApp never ask for personal details or send random links. This alert comes as cybercrime cases are increasing and people are becoming more concerned about digital safety in the country.
