Punjab is about to make a historical milestone with the introduction of the Pink Games which are bound to be the biggest female sports event in the province so far. The event will take place during the last week in October and will involve over 3,000 female participants in each of the divisions of Punjab.
The announcement was done during a top-level meeting headed by Punjab Minister Sports Faisal Ayub Khokhar, Sports Secretary Muzaffar Sial and DG Sports Khizar Afzal Chaudhry. The officials affirmed that logistics are all being streamlined to deliver international standard arrangements in the event.
Minister Khokhar emphasized that the Pink Games are a symbol of the governmental push towards equality between men and women in sport, as well as providing women with an opportunity to express their talent. The competition has attracted millions of dollars in prize money, and has not only been historic, but is also a commercially important event to both the athletes and the sponsors.
Punjab has seen inter-school and inter-college tournaments over the years but this women tournament is a break through. Sports board is also connecting the event to the wider development strategies such as facilities upgrades and provincial, national and international recognition pathways.
The list of categories is yet to be finalized but athletics, hockey, basketball, archery, tape-ball cricket, badminton and table tennis are likely to reappear. As the preparations are in progress, the Pink Games are being positioned as a groundbreaking event of inclusivity, empowerment, and sporting excellence.
