Islamabad, Aug 6, 2025: In a major step toward sustainable energy and cost efficiency, the Punjab government has launched an initiative to power all Orange Line Train stations with solar energy. This move is expected to significantly cut down electricity expenses while promoting renewable energy use in public transport.
The new project involves the installation of a 1.6 megawatt solar power system that will supply electricity to all 26 stations of the Orange Line Metro Train. This solar-powered setup will support essential operations including escalators, lighting systems, and other station facilities.
Officials familiar with the project have confirmed that the solar energy will be sufficient to meet the daily electricity demands of the train’s infrastructure. As a result, the shift is projected to save the government millions of rupees each month, reducing the financial burden on the provincial budget.
The Punjab government currently spends billions of rupees annually to subsidize the Orange Line. By integrating solar technology, this subsidy load is expected to drop significantly, making the system more sustainable in the long term.
