Islamabad, June 24, 2025: In a major push to curb life-threatening travel practices, the Punjab Traffic Police has launched an aggressive enforcement campaign across the province. Over 13,600 transporters have been penalized in June alone for facilitating dangerous rooftop travel, a violation that continues to threaten public safety.
Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Traffic Police, Mirza Farhan Baig, confirmed that fines amounting to over Rs. 9.8 million have been imposed on violators. The crackdown targets those transporters who allow passengers to ride on rooftops—a reckless act that has already caused numerous tragedies in the past.
In a coordinated effort, more than 6,700 vehicles were impounded, and 666 drivers were booked under FIRs for endangering lives. The AIG firmly stated, “The lives of our citizens cannot be risked for financial gain. Transporters must understand that safety comes first, not profit.”
To support enforcement with education, the Punjab Traffic Police has also rolled out a province-wide awareness campaign. The initiative is focused on educating both drivers and commuters about the legal and human consequences of violating traffic regulations.
The department has urged all transport operators to cooperate fully and adopt responsible travel practices. The AIG reiterated that the mission is not just about issuing fines but saving lives and ensuring safe journeys for all.
This proactive stance by the traffic police comes amid rising concerns over road safety in Pakistan, particularly in rural and suburban areas where overloaded and rooftop travel remains prevalent.
