Islamabad, Jan 26: The Punjab government’s flagship housing initiative, Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar, has marked a major milestone by distributing over Rs8.5 billion in interest-free loans to more than 9,000 individuals, according to officials on Sunday. The program, which is led by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has garnered significant attention for its rapid progress in providing affordable housing solutions to the residents of the province.
Launched as a part of Punjab’s efforts to tackle homelessness and offer accessible housing to low-income families, Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar has already seen an overwhelming response. In just a few months, the program received 400,000 applications through its dedicated portal, which aims to facilitate the loan application process. As part of Phase I, 5,000 loans have already been distributed, and construction of the homes is progressing. Phase II has seen another 3,000 loans issued, with construction for these homes underway as well.

To ensure transparency and fairness, the verification of applications is being handled by three independent microfinance institutions. The Punjab government has set ambitious targets, aiming to build 100,000 homes within a year and a total of 500,000 homes in the next five years, as per the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar program operates through the official portal, acag.punjab.gov.pk, where individuals can access detailed information and apply for loans. A dedicated helpline, 0800-09100, has also been established for assistance. Those receiving a loan of Rs1.5 million will be required to repay the principal amount over nine years, with manageable monthly installments of Rs14,000.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, speaking about the program, emphasized her commitment to eradicating homelessness in Punjab. She expressed that the program would be the most successful housing initiative in Pakistan’s history. “The state is like a mother, and a mother’s greatest concern is for her children without a roof over their heads,” she said, underscoring her dedication to ensuring every person in Punjab can own their own home. Sharif also stated that the loan distribution is merit-based, free from favoritism or recommendations, ensuring fairness in the process.
The Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of families across Punjab, with the Chief Minister expressing her personal joy at seeing these homes come to life. “Seeing these houses being built feels as joyous as building a home for myself,” she added.
