Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz kept a close watch on the current flood crisis in the province despite her visit to Japan on an official tour. During the flight, the chief minister held meetings, and was in regular contact with provincial officials to be updated on rescue and relief efforts, according to Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari.

Bukhari informed media persons in Lahore that Punjab had a ready-made flood management plan and all the departments with respect to it were in an alert situation. She observed that this unforeseen release of water in India was a foreseen event and some precaution measures had been put in place ahead of time. The minister further added that no casualties were reported yet, but the Ravi River became unprecedented in the last 38 years.

The Army has been shown on the ground to support in relief operations in various districts. Authorities are keeping the situation under constant check so that they can evacuate and assist people in time. Bukhari reinforced that the co-ordinated method has assisted in reducing a possible danger and mentioned the proactive steps initiated by the provincial government.

The engagement of Maryam Nawaz in her Japan tour shows her seriousness in monitoring the situation in Punjab floods as she has taken up the flood management as a personal responsibility and with this trip to Japan, she has ensured that relief efforts are effective and that people are still safe during that situation.
