Lahore, April 10: In a major crackdown on food safety, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has seized a staggering 12,000 kilograms of fungus-infested apple and carrot preserves from a production unit in the Sundar Industrial Estate.
This operation, aimed at safeguarding public health, revealed deeply concerning hygiene violations, including foul odors and preserves stored in unsanitary conditions.
Unhygienic Conditions Exposed
During the raid, PFA officials found that the production facility was far from meeting health and safety standards. The preserves were stored in non-food-grade drums, and raw materials were found lying directly on dirty floors. Expired flavoring agents were also discovered, indicating a lack of proper quality control. The facility’s staff also failed to present necessary medical certificates and training records, further complicating the matter.

Health Risks Posed by Substandard Preserves
The seized products, including ‘murabba harar,’ carrot, and ‘gulkand’ preserves, posed serious health risks, particularly to stomach and intestinal health. The fungus contamination made these preserves dangerous for consumption, potentially leading to foodborne illnesses.
PFA’s Commitment to Public Health
The Director General of Punjab Food Authority (DG PFA) emphasized that these products were being distributed to urban and suburban markets in Lahore, putting thousands of consumers at risk. The PFA has imposed a Rs. 200,000 fine on the production unit and committed to taking strict action against businesses that prioritize profit over public health.
By uncovering these hazardous practices, the Punjab Food Authority is sending a strong message to the food industry: there will be zero tolerance for substandard products that threaten the well-being of the public. The PFA’s vigilance will continue to ensure that only safe, quality food reaches consumers.
