Islamabad, Feb 24: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched the Chief Minister Transplant Program, a historic initiative aimed at providing free organ transplants to those in need. The program, the most extensive of its kind in Pakistan’s history, covers liver, kidney, bone marrow, and cornea transplants, along with cochlear implants for children with hearing impairments.
Designed to benefit underprivileged patients, the initiative ensures that life-saving procedures are accessible without financial burden, as the government will fully fund all transplant costs. Eligible individuals can register through the Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority, streamlining the process for those in need of urgent medical intervention.
In a move to maximize healthcare reach, the program will extend beyond public hospitals, with private healthcare facilities also participating in transplant services. To facilitate easy access to information and assistance, a toll-free helpline (0900-90800) has been established.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz highlighted the program’s transformative impact, stating that children born deaf will be able to hear through cochlear implants, while corneal transplants will restore sight for individuals suffering from blindness. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent access to critical medical care, particularly for liver and kidney transplants.
The Chief Minister Transplant Program represents a significant step in Punjab’s healthcare advancement, offering hope to thousands in need of complex medical procedures. By making transplants free and accessible, the initiative sets a new benchmark for public health services in Pakistan, reaffirming the government’s focus on social welfare and healthcare equity.
