Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the Punjab Smart Waste Management project to promote eco-friendly practices in schools across the province.
In the first phase, colored bins will be placed in both government and private institutions for proper waste segregation.According to the plan, schools must install five different bins by September 30, with inspections beginning October 1.
Institutions failing to comply will face fines. Environment Minister Maryam Aurangzeb will monitor the project, while Education Minister Rana Sikandar and Local Government Minister Zeeshan Malik have been assigned targets.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has directed the use of:Yellow bins for paper and cardboardGreen bins for bottles and glassGrey bins for food and organic wasteRed bins for metalOrange bins for plastic
The collected waste will be recycled to reduce pollution and encourage sustainability.
The Local Government Department will distribute bins, and the EPA will ensure strict monitoring. Schools meeting standards will receive certificates, while the Punjab Helpline (1139) will provide waste collection support.
