Islamabad, June 24, 2025: In response to the increasing faculty shortage in public medical colleges, the Punjab administration has opted to appoint retired teachers on a contractual basis to bridge essential teaching staff gaps throughout the province.
The upper age cap for employing retired teachers has now been raised to 65 years, said the Punjab Health Department.
This step is considered to fulfill staff shortages in vital medical specialties such as pediatric and cardiac surgery, pulmonology, oncology, cardiology, biochemistry, forensic sciences, and anesthesiology.

The health department has instructed all 36 public-sector medical colleges and affiliated teaching hospitals across the province to finalize the hiring process by June 30. The urgent recruitment will prioritize no fewer than 12 departments experiencing severe staff shortfalls, with a primary focus on engaging associate professors.

An internal memo shared with government-run medical institutions highlighted that these roles are provisional and will be discontinued once permanent faculty members are selected through the standard recruitment framework.
