Islamabad, Feb 1: The annual desilting operation at Khanpur Dam, which serves as the primary water source for Rawalpindi and Islamabad, is scheduled to take place from February 10 to February 20. As a result, both cities will experience water supply disruptions until the process concludes on February 23.
Officials confirmed that the desilting is a routine maintenance procedure aimed at preventing sediment buildup and ensuring smooth water flow. The operation will cover the Khanpur Dam and extend to the Sangjani filtration plant, which will also undergo cleaning during the period.

Residents, businesses, and commercial establishments in Rawalpindi and Islamabad have been advised to store sufficient water in advance to avoid shortages. Authorities are urging the public to limit water usage during this maintenance window to help manage the reduced supply. For those facing urgent water shortages, the Water Supply Branch has offered assistance, and affected individuals can contact them for support.
A private contractor has been hired to carry out the desilting operation, employing both large and small-scale machinery to ensure the work is completed efficiently. Water supply is expected to resume as normal on February 23, once the desilting and cleaning processes are concluded. Residents are advised to plan accordingly and prepare for the temporary disruption in water availability.
