Islamabad, July 5, 2025: The district administration stays on high alert as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts intense monsoon rains in Rawalpindi starting from the evening of July 5.
Both the Cantonments, Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi (MCR), and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) have separately devised emergency strategies to deal with any emergency that may arise in the coming days, under the supervision of the District Administration. These strategies include preventive actions through public awareness campaigns, clearing of drains, rescue services, and emergency hospital arrangements.
The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has completed the desilting of 29 main drains within its jurisdiction.
“Our teams are on high alert in this regard and a coordination mechanism has been established to continuously monitor the situation,” stated Nasir Kamal, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RCB, during a brief discussion with APP here today.
Alongside the drain-clearing operation, RCB has also advised residents to remain cautious during the monsoon season.
The rain spell is expected to persist till July 8, as moist air currents strengthen and a westerly system moves in on July 6. PMD has cautioned that heavy downpours may cause flash floods in Rawalpindi’s local water channels and streams, with low-lying areas at high risk of urban flooding between July 6 and 8.

The Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi (MCR) has instructed owners, residents, and tenants of hazardous and rundown buildings, already declared unsafe, to promptly demolish these structures or repair the parts that can be saved.
“Failure to comply will result in legal action against them under existing laws, including the registration of an FIR at the relevant police station,” said an MCR spokesperson.

Meanwhile, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has already completed the desilting of Nullah Lai, the longest and most flood-prone drain in the city. In addition to this, other drainage channels have also been examined and cleared to ensure smooth water flow.
According to the PMD alert, heavy rains, hailstorms and thunderstorms are expected which might disrupt daily activities and pose serious threats to citizens. These weather conditions emphasize the need for enhanced readiness throughout the city to protect lives and reduce losses.
