Islamabad, July 17, 2025:  Heavy rain has been falling in Islamabad and Rawalpindi since last night, said a spokesperson for WASA.

“WASA Rawalpindi is on high alert, with a rain emergency declared. Staff and heavy machinery have been deployed to low-lying areas,” said WASA Managing Director Muhammad Saleem Ashraf.

The Minister for Housing, Bilal Yasin, and Secretary for Housing, Noorul Amin Mengal, have spoken to the WASA MD and told him to speed up water drainage work, the spokesperson added.

The WASA MD is personally checking the drainage process, and regular checking of Nullah Lai and other city drains is going on.

At Katarian, the water height in Nullah Lai has reached 16 feet, while at Gawalmandi Bridge it is 14 feet, as per the MD.

More than 100 millimeters of rainfall has been noted in the twin cities overall.

According to the Meteorological Department, the amount of rain recorded in different areas includes: 53 mm in Saidpur, 77 mm in Golra, 95 mm in Bokra, 63 mm at PMD, 67 mm in Shamsabad, 105 mm in Kacheri, 90 mm in both Pirwadhai and Gawalmandi, and 80 mm in Katarian, according to the WASA spokesperson.

Big water pumps are being used to clear rainwater from low-lying spots, the MD said, adding that WASA is fully ready to manage any urgent situation.

In response to the worsening weather conditions, the Rawalpindi district administration has also officially declared a one-day public holiday. This decision comes as part of safety measures to protect citizens from the ongoing extreme weather situation affecting the region.
