ISLAMABAD, AUGUST 19: Only a few days before Pakistan’s first Test match against Bangladesh, scheduled to start on August 21, the pitch at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium gives a green top.
Thoughts of fast bowlers dominating early in the match have been aroused by the green top, but seasoned watchers warn that appearances may be misleading in Pakistan.
Pitch conditions in Pakistan historically tend to flatten out during a game, giving the batsmen more support and the bowlers less.
The forthcoming series has great importance as Pakistan aims to gain ground in their domestic Test campaign. At initially, just the first Test match was supposed to be in Rawalpindi, while the second game was supposed to happen in Karachi.
Hemming has reportedly been told to set up a wicket that will help both fast bowlers and hitters, which may make for a thrilling match. There’s still a good quantity of grass on the field, indicating a quick and springy surface.
However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to also move the second Test, which was originally slated for August 30, to Rawalpindi due to ongoing redevelopment at the Karachi National Stadium.
With this modification, both games will now take place at the same location, giving players and spectators a chance to get comfortable in a known setting.
The pitch’s state continues to be a key concern as both teams get ready for the series. Bangladesh will be planning to overcome any early obstacles, while Pakistan’s pace attack will be keen to take advantage of the green top.
