When the family courts reopened after a 31-day summer vacation, there were more cases of marital dissolution filed than ever before on the first day. Monday, September 1, family courts in Rawalpindi district received 213 new family-related filings, all of which were divorce, dower (Mahr), and child-maintenance cases as well as dowry-return claims.
Of these, 168 cases received an instant hearing, to which husbands were called to answer. First orders of 45 more cases will be received on Tuesday, September 2. Later-than-usual judge transfers were also caused by delayed filings made over the summer recess. The second day is expected to attract another 100 family matters to be registered.
Many women came to registration branch with parents and legal representatives. These new cases of marital dissolution are primarily precipitated by the breakdown of so-called love marriages or sanctioned relationships that did not last long. The main reasons are financial problems, unemployment, marriage fraud and husband immaturity. In fact, many of these marriages also started with social media ties on Facebook, Tik Tok, Instagram, YouTube, and Messenger.
