Islamabad, 12 May, 2025: Two New Underpasses are set to transform Rawalpindi’s traffic landscape as the Punjab government moves forward with feasibility studies for major road infrastructure developments.
The proposed schemes include an underpass each at Chandni Chowk and Marrir Chowk, along with a flyover stretching across IJ Principal Road.
The initiatives, likely to be part of the 2025–26 Annual Development Programme, aim to reduce mounting congestion in one of Punjab’s busiest cities.
Officials from the Housing and Urban Development Department noted that the proposals had been forwarded by key parliamentarians, including Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi (NA-56) and lawmaker Danyal Chaudhry (NA-57).

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has been assigned the task of conducting feasibility and engineering design work, with a provisional budget of Rs. 40 million set aside for each of the Two New Underpasses and the flyover project.
According to the initial outline, the Chandni Chowk site will see a single-barrel underpass linking Rawal Road to Murree Road.
Similarly, a new underpass at Marrir Chowk is being planned to smooth traffic flow at this key junction.
In addition, a one-kilometre, two-lane flyover is proposed from Siddique Chowk towards IJ Principal Road to offer signal-free passage and ease bottlenecks.
An official familiar with the planning process stated that these upgrades are intended to eliminate choke points and create continuous traffic corridors through critical intersections.
He indicated that the Chandni and Marrir Chowk tunnels would significantly shorten commute times and offer safer travel alternatives.

Construction work is expected to commence once current projects at The Mall and Adiala Road reach completion.
Further proposals are also under review, including a potential underpass or flyover at Kutcheri Chowk, where groundwork for feasibility has already started.
Authorities believe these developments, especially the Two New Underpasses, will not only ease congestion but also support local business growth and reduce vehicular emissions, contributing to a healthier urban environment.
