As the holy month of Ramazan commences, streets in Rawalpindi have become vibrant cricket grounds, with enthusiastic youth playing from late evening until dawn.
However, these impromptu matches have led to traffic congestion and public disturbances.
Cricket matches are being played in residential areas, alleys, and marketplaces, often disrupting traffic and causing noise pollution.
Despite the commotion, law enforcement officials, including mobile police units and the Dolphin Force, reportedly pass by without intervention.
Efforts by authorities and residents to halt the matches are frequently met with resistance. Several neighbourhoods, including Dhoke Khabba, Dhoke Ratta, Arya Mohalla, and Satellite Town, have even organised night tournaments, attracting teams from across the city.
Residents complain that the continuous noise disturbs Taraweeh prayers and disrupts the sleep of fasting individuals. Additionally, stray cricket balls have led to broken windows, minor injuries, and heated altercations.
Defending their late-night games, young players argue that the city lacks adequate sports facilities, leaving them with no alternative but to play on the streets.
Meanwhile, concerned locals emphasize the need for responsible play to minimize disturbances.
With no immediate resolution in sight, these night cricket matches are expected to continue until Chaand Raat, highlighting the urgent need for better recreational spaces in Rawalpindi.
