Islamabad, June 17, 2025: In a bold move to modernize public transport, the Punjab government has unveiled a massive Rs. 85 billion transport budget for the 2024 fiscal year, marking a transformative step toward efficient urban mobility across the province.
At the heart of this investment is the Yellow Line Mass Transit System in Lahore, receiving an initial allocation of Rs. 10 billion. Once completed, the Yellow Line will significantly enhance the Lahore Metro network, easing congestion and improving city-wide connectivity.
To ensure ongoing progress, Rs. 4.57 billion is set aside for current transport projects already in motion. The government also plans to inject Rs. 80.43 billion into new ventures aimed at upgrading Punjab’s transport infrastructure, signaling a clear push for innovation and modernization.
Part of the strategy includes the rollout of a centralized automated fare collection and scheduling system for buses, backed by Rs. 50 million. Meanwhile, Rs. 5 million has been reserved to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel working at the Orange Line Metro Train depot.
In terms of infrastructure, Rs. 500 million will fund a new urban bus depot at Thokar Niaz Baig, Rs. 400 million will go toward a depot near Lahore Railway Station, and Rs. 200 million is allocated for electric bus depots, reinforcing Punjab’s shift toward sustainable transport.
