Islamabad, Sep 21: Saudi authorities have called on Muslims performing Umrah to avoid crowding and maintain physical distancing during rituals at the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
The Ministry of Hajj emphasized that these precautions are vital in reducing the spread of contagious diseases, including respiratory infections.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the ministry reiterated, “Avoiding jostling ensures a safe Umrah.”
They also encouraged pilgrims to wear facemasks while in both the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, as an added layer of protection against viral illnesses.
Further advice from the ministry includes staying hydrated, especially during the hot weather, by drinking plenty of water.
This year’s Umrah season, which follows the annual Hajj pilgrimage, began in late June. Officials report that 13.5 million Muslims performed Umrah last year, with plans to host 15 million pilgrims next year. Saudi Arabia has introduced several measures to make Umrah easier, including:
- Extending the Umrah visa from 30 to 90 days, allowing entry through any land, air, or seaport.
- Allowing women to perform Umrah without a male guardian.
- Permitting Muslims holding various visa types, such as personal, visit, and tourism visas, to perform Umrah after booking an e-appointment.
Additionally, Saudi citizens can now invite friends from abroad to visit and perform Umrah.
