Islamabad, JULY28: Anum Uzair of Pakistan has successfully reached the summit of Mount Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain, which stands at an intimidating 8,051 meters. Anum followed in Naila Kiani’s footsteps and made history by becoming only the second Pakistani woman to summit this formidable peak.
Her ascent of Broad Peak marks a significant milestone in her career as it is her second successful summit of a “8000er,” a term used to denote mountains exceeding 8,000 meters in height. Her achievement not only demonstrates her extraordinary skill and determination, but also emphasizes the increasing number of Pakistani women entering the traditionally male-dominated sport of high-altitude mountaineering.
Anum Uzair and her husband Ahmed Uzair, who are 8,163 meters above sea level in Nepal, became the first couple from Pakistan to summit Mount Manaslu, the eighth-highest peak in the world, on September 24, 2023.
There are many risks involved with reaching the summit of Mount Broad Peak, including navigating dangerous ice and rock walls, erratic weather, and the physical and psychological effects of being at such an extreme height.
Anum thanked her teammates and well-wishers back home for their support in a statement released after her summit. The accomplishment of Anum Uzair inspires and brings pride to Pakistan, motivating more women to follow their aspirations in the face of adversity.
Her performance on Broad Peak not only honors personal achievement but also marks a noteworthy advancement for gender parity in the adventure sports community.
