Islamabad, Sep 23: Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) is facing a significant water shortage, with a daily requirement of 126 million gallons for its population of 2.3 million.
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) currently supplies only 70 to 80 million gallons, resulting in a considerable shortfall.
Despite having three dams—Smalley, Rawal, and Khanpur—and 201 tube wells, the CDA has struggled to meet the city’s water needs.
To address this crisis, the CDA has announced plans for two new dams: Shahdara Dam and Chinyot Dam, expected to be completed within four years. These projects aim to provide an additional 18 to 21 million gallons per day, helping to alleviate the shortage, particularly in urban and rural areas.
CDA Water Supply Director Sardar Khan Zamri stated that Shahdara Dam will supply six to seven million gallons daily, while Chinyot Dam will contribute 12 to 14 million gallons.
He also mentioned that a clearer project timeline will be available after the completion of pre-feasibility studies with assistance from consultants and WAPDA. Additionally, the Dutara Dam water supply project is set to be completed within four months, offering some short-term relief to residents.
