Islamabad, Nov 5: Shaikh Commends UN Bodies for Their Role in Pakistan. Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh, the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, was visited by Mohamed Yahya, the United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC). The International Labor Organization’s delegate, Geir Tonstol, attended the meeting as well.
When the two guests arrived at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, the minister greeted them. The minister began the conversation by stating that the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs are collaborating to resolve the problems facing Pakistan’s maritime industry.
In order to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the United Nations Development Programs, the minister further stated that Pakistan’s maritime sector is changing to an environmentally friendly model. We are concentrating on aquaculture, electric and hybrid vessels, route optimization, and digitalization for this reason, according to Qasiser Ahmed Shaikh.
He added that the reason the federal government and the provincial governments are concentrating on the SDGs is because we are eager to enhance our air quality index and are dealing with the problem of smog and other forms of pollution.
Speaking on Pakistan’s labor rights, the minister stated that efforts are being made by the government to fortify labor courts. All federal ministries, including the maritime ministry, pay their contract workers and daily wagers in accordance with established international norms, he continued.
The minister acknowledged that labor rights violations are a problem in our developing nation, particularly in remote locations. According to Qaiser Shaikh, the International Labor Organization (ILO) and provincial labor ministries are working together to defend workers’ rights.
The federal minister praised the UNRC’s participation during the floods in 2022. He claimed that because this natural calamity touched 33 million people, it was a very trying moment for Pakistan. He appreciated that the UNRC provided us with significant financial and personnel resources during this period, and that we are currently working together to restore the areas damaged by the floods.
