Islamabad, Sep 27: Shakib Al Hasan, the most famous cricket player from Bangladesh who went on to become notorious, has announced his immediate retirement from Twenty20 international cricket.
At a pivotal point in his remarkable career, the news was made prior to the India Test at Kanpur. In addition, Shakib disclosed that the October Test match in Dhaka against South Africa will be his final one.
Shakib made his choice during a turbulent period in his personal and political life. His parliamentary role in politics under the tenure of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has generated controversy. Shakib was elected on an Awami League platform, but his political connections have come under investigation, particularly in the wake of the Awami League’s demise and the subsequent civil upheaval in Bangladesh.
In the midst of these political turmoils, Shakib has encountered numerous legal obstacles. Due to the numerous charges brought against him, he has been residing overseas and is unable to return to Bangladesh. On August 23, Shakib Al Hasan, who was with the Bangladesh team on tour in Pakistan, was accused of killing a worker at a Dhaka clothing factory. To make matters more complicated, he decided to go to England rather than accompany his squad back to Bangladesh.
Shakib’s troubles are exacerbated by the fact that he is currently involved in a grave legal dispute with the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission. He has been fined 5 million Taka by the commission for allegedly manipulating stock prices. There have been allegations made against him of violating the Securities Act. Shakib’s retirement announcement has been clouded by these legal and political issues, overshadowing his accomplishments in cricket.
