Islamabad, Aug 13, 2025: Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah has unveiled a plan to supply affordable electricity in Karachi for both households and industries through the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA).

Speaking to reporters, he said SEPRA’s rates will be far lower than K-Electric’s, as the provincial government will produce its own energy and transmit it via the Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company (STDC). This arrangement will let Sindh set independent power tariffs without following NEPRA’s pricing.

According to Shah, electricity moved through STDC will be priced well below the federal benchmark. Recruitment for SEPRA is complete, with an official notification expected later this month. The first supply under this system will target the Port Qasim grid, with the main priority being industrial and economic zones.

The Sindh Assembly has already granted constitutional approval for SEPRA, ensuring cheaper electricity in Karachi if the transmission network remains with STDC.

Shah criticized K-Electric for having no provincial representation on its board, pointing out that all three directors are federal appointees. Sindh has demanded two directors from the province and one from the federal government.

He also confirmed that an agreement has been signed to supply K-Electric with low-cost solar energy, urging the utility to avoid costly fuel-based generation when solar power is available.
