Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has stated that the provincial government of Sindh has announced that it will start drug testing pupils in schools in July. The minister had earlier said that drug tests would be conducted on pupils at Karachi’s educational institutions at random by the provincial authorities.
Memon stated that certain pupils will take exams at random and that their names would remain confidential. He said, “Students will be asked who gave them the drug and their parents will be notified if they test positive for drugs.”
However, the government of Sindh would not bring any charges against these students. The minister also spoke about street crime in Karachi, noting that recently, things have been improving. Furthermore, the police will soon be able to fight criminals using state-of-the-art weapons.
Memon said that in order to assist those affected by the severe weather, heatwave camps had been established. The minister went on to say that several discussions had been conducted to address the issue of rain in Sindh province. He assured the populace that the administration is prepared to deal with any challenges brought on by inclement weather.
Among others, the provincial secretaries for home ministries, health, and education attended the meeting. During his briefing, the education secretary announced that he had begun compiling a list of kids that will be sent to the health department for the purpose of initiating drug testing. “As and when required,” stated the chief minister, he will release the necessary monies for the testing. The chief minister brought up the alarming statistics that several of the best universities in the country have released regarding student drug use during the conference. In Pakistan, he believed at the time, there were approximately 7.6 million drug users, of which 78% were men and 22% were women.
