Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon has strongly criticized the European Union for failing to take action against Israel over what she described as “genocidal acts” in Gaza, accusing the bloc of double standards compared to its sanctions on Russia.

In an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday, Fajon said the EU had not imposed “a single measure” against Israel despite mounting civilian casualties and a UN-backed declaration of famine in Gaza. She contrasted this with the EU’s united stance on punishing Russia for its war in Ukraine, where Brussels has adopted 18 rounds of sanctions.

“I hear a lot of criticism from our global partners who don’t understand the way we are reacting to these distinct conflicts,” Fajon said, urging greater societal pressure on the EU to act. She added that her priority is to end what she called a “brutal war” in Gaza.

Israel continues to face international backlash, with several Western countries moving toward recognition of a Palestinian state and scaling back defense or trade ties. Slovenia has emerged as one of the EU’s most vocal critics of Israel’s military campaign, becoming the first EU state to halt arms trade with Tel Aviv, bar entry for two Israeli ministers, and ban imports from occupied Palestinian territories.

Ljubljana has also joined Spain, Norway, Ireland, Canada, and France in supporting Palestinian statehood, aligning with a growing global push for a two-state solution.
