Islamabad, Mar 22, 2025: The Solar Association has strongly opposed the government’s recent decision to reduce net metering rates, calling it a severe blow to the renewable energy sector.
Addressing the media, Chairman Adil Mahmood criticized the authorities for backtracking on their commitments to promoting solar energy, which could discourage future investments.
Mahmood highlighted that high-ranking official, including the President and Prime Minister, had previously encouraged citizens to adopt solar power.
However, the sudden reduction in net metering rates contradicts those assurances. “For years, the government urged people to switch to solar energy.
Now, they charge Rs. 54 per unit for electricity while offering solar producers only Rs. 10 per unit.
This policy shift is unfair to those who have already invested in renewable energy,” he remarked.
He further warned that the decision could cause significant financial setbacks for homeowners and businesses that installed solar systems expecting stable returns.

The abrupt change, made without consulting key industry stakeholders, raises concerns about policy inconsistency and its impact on Pakistan’s renewable energy future.
The Solar Association has called for an immediate reversal of the new rates, emphasizing the need for sustainable energy policies to ensure long-term stability.
Mahmood urged the government to reconsider its stance and work towards policies that support rather than hinder the growth of the solar industry.
If this decision is not reversed, Pakistan risks slowing down its transition to renewable energy, affecting both economic and environmental progress.
The Solar Association remains firm in its demand for fair policies that encourage clean energy adoption and protect solar investors from unexpected losses.
