An alarming audit report has revealed that solar panels theft in Rajanpur schools during 2022–23 caused losses of over Rs. 6.5 million. The panels, installed in 50 schools across the district to ensure uninterrupted electricity, were stolen due to poor security and negligence by local authorities.
The findings were presented before the Punjab Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee-III, raising serious questions about accountability.
During the session, the committee expressed deep concern and urged immediate police action across the province. Fears were also raised that similar solar panels theft in Rajanpur schools may have occurred in other districts, highlighting a widespread issue.
Committee member Tanveer Aslam Malik demanded strict orders for district police officers, along with detailed reports on the number of affected schools and the extent of recovery, if any.
The Education Department confirmed that police complaints had been filed, but the Audit Department strongly criticized district education authorities for their failure to safeguard valuable equipment. The incident not only reflects weak monitoring but also threatens the government’s efforts to promote renewable energy solutions in schools.
