Islamabad, July 28, 2025: In a bold move to revive its tourism-driven economy, Sri Lanka has granted visa-free entry to travelers from 40 countries, making international visits more affordable and hassle-free. This major shift in immigration policy is expected to attract millions of tourists globally and position the island nation as a leading travel destination in South Asia.
List of Visa-Free Countries Grows to 40
As of July 25, 2025, passport holders from regions including the United States, United Kingdom, UAE, Australia, India, Pakistan, and Canada can now visit Sri Lanka without paying visa fees. This decision was finalized after Cabinet approval, signaling Sri Lanka’s intent to fast-track tourism-led growth.
Previously, visa-free access was limited to just seven Asian countries, including China and Thailand, under a pilot program initiated in March 2023. That initiative has now expanded significantly.
Tourism Over Revenue: A Calculated Shift
Despite an estimated revenue loss of over USD 66 million annually in visa fees, Sri Lanka’s leadership believes the economic boost from tourism will compensate for the shortfall. Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed that the government’s priority is long-term growth through strategic incentives.
“The economy has shown signs of recovery, and this move will create more jobs, support local businesses, and improve foreign exchange,” Herath noted.
What Travelers Need to Know
Even with the visa waiver, visitors must still obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving. However, there will be no fee charged for eligible travelers, simplifying the travel process.
