Islamabad, July 20, 2025: In a major step toward green mobility and economic empowerment, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a nationwide plan to distribute free electric bikes to top students across all education boards, including the Federal Board.
Electric Rickshaws and Loaders for the Unemployed
Alongside the student scheme, the federal government will also provide electric rickshaws and loaders to unemployed citizens as part of a broader push to support low-income families and encourage eco-friendly transport alternatives. The initiative is expected to boost both employment and sustainability across Pakistan.
Shehbaz Sharif Highlights Long-Term EV Benefits
Chairing a high-level meeting on the government’s electric mobility plan, PM Shehbaz Sharif underlined the long-term impact of electric vehicles (EVs). He emphasized that shifting to EVs would cut Pakistan’s dependency on imported fuel, save valuable foreign reserves, and support environmental goals.
“This move will not only benefit the climate but also empower our youth and jobless citizens by offering modern, efficient means of transport,” he said.
Priority for Economically Disadvantaged Students
To ensure fairness, the prime minister instructed that top-performing students from underprivileged backgrounds be given priority. The scheme will roll out through transparent selection processes across all provinces and territories.

Boosting Local EV Production and Awareness
Shehbaz Sharif has also directed concerned departments to develop a full-scale ecosystem for EV production, maintenance, and repair in Pakistan. This includes collaboration with the Federal Board of Revenue to draft a detailed execution roadmap. Third-party oversight and public awareness campaigns will also be launched to ensure transparency and participation.
